The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme
The UK’s largest training programme promoting socially acceptable dogs and creating responsible owners.
The Dog Barn is proud to have gained Kennel Club listed status and promote the values of the Good Citizen Dog Scheme through our training classes and assessments. These classes and awards are available to all dogs of any age whether they are Kennel Club registered or not.
There are three levels to achieve which must be completed in the order bronze, silver and then gold. Training for Bronze and Silver awards is an 8 week course and Gold Award is 10 weeks in groups of no more than 10 followed by an assessment by an independent examiner appointed by The Kennel Club. The cost for the course including the assessment is £80. Please get in touch for more information or course starting dates.
Bronze Award – Sundays 12pm – 1pm
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Award aims to produce a dog that will walk and behave in a controlled manner on the lead, will stay in one position on command, will allow its owner to clean, groom and inspect it, a dog that will walk and behave in a happy natural manner, under control on the lead. The dog must also be able to be positioned by its handler for inspection i.e. stand, sit or lie down. The Bronze award aims to provide the handlers with a basic knowledge of understanding and training their canine companion. Owners should actively take on board the spirit of the scheme, which is to encourage happy, contented dogs, which are well behaved.
Silver Award – Sundays 1pm – 2pm
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Silver Award aims to build upon the skills learned in the Bronze Award whilst increasing the level of difficulty. The Silver Award is a natural progression of practical dog training skills and introduces new concepts such as the controlled greeting, road walk and vehicle control exercises which are important in everyday life situations. This award aims to provide handlers with a good knowledge of understanding and training their canine companion.
Gold Award – Sundays 2pm – 3pm
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Gold Award is the highest level of achievement and is a major accomplishment to be very proud of. The Kennel Club expects dogs who have attained this level to be worthy of receiving their highest award and examines it accordingly. The Gold Award builds upon the skills learned in the Silver Award and develops more advanced training skills of both dog and owner. This level is a natural progression of practical dog training skills and introduces new concepts such as relaxed isolation, stop the dog and send to bed exercises, which are important in every day life situations. Dogs must be 12 months or older to complete the assessment for this award.
